Youth MHFA:
One Day Course

Course Overview

Completion of the Adult MHFA One Day course will qualify you as a Youth MHFA Champion.

Once qualified as a Youth MHFA Champion, you will be able to:

  • Display an understanding of common mental health issues and how they may affect young people
  • Utilise skills to spot signs of mental ill health in young people and point them towards the appropriate support
  • Confidently and knowledgeably advocate for mental health awareness
  • Utilise skills to support positive personal wellbeing

What to Expect from the Course

A mix of workshop activities, presentations, and group discussions will be used to guide learning on this course. Up to 16 people can participate in sessions at any one time, helping to ensure that the instructor keeps participants safe and supported throughout. Young people are welcome to participate, but must have the permission of a parent or guardian if they are under 16 years-old.

Participants will complete two learning sessions over the one day duration of the course.

Every participant who completes the course will receive:

  • A certificate to show you are a Youth MHFA Champion
  • A Mental Health First Aid resources manual to be kept for reference

Course Structure

Session 1

This session will begin by exploring why the group has chosen to join together to learn about Youth Mental Health First Aid. The group will then discuss the broader definitions of mental health and mental ill health.

The group will also examine the Mental Health First Aid action plan and explore the stigma and discrimination that surrounds mental health. The session will then move on to discuss the topics of depression and suicide.

Session 2

This session will see the group explore a number of topics, including: self-harm, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and psychosis.

The group will then explore the recovery process for those experiencing mental ill health and resilience in the face of mental ill health.
