Q&A – Heidi Curtis

“I can’t wait to be more mindful in the outside world and take in all my experiences”

“I am passionate about wanting people to feel good about themselves.”

A breakout indie singer/songwriter from Newcastle, Heidi describes dreaming up melodies while painting.

Her songwriting journey began as a way of trying to work her way into her brother’s inner circle, something which clearly worked as her brother is now her manager.

We chatted to her to see how she has coped with the last year, and to find out what keeps her feeling on top form.

Hi Heidi! How has the pandemic affected your mental health?

Initially at the start of the pandemic, there was a huge range of emotions from uncertainty to confusion.

Easing into lockdown I found myself looking inwards.

My songwriting became more personal.

I think my mental health has been challenged, but I feel I’ve experienced a positive change overall.

Are you doing anything differently to look after your mental health during this period?

I exercise and meditate everyday.

If I didn’t complete my tasks I used to feel loads of guilt, so now I plan my day.

I’m not as negative towards myself if I’ve done that.

Combining art and time for reading has helped calm my mind as well.

What are you looking forward to doing once things improve?

I’m excited to play live music again, and be able to do things I took for granted before the lockdown.

What new TV, films, music or books have you discovered during lockdown that you’d recommend?

I discovered the American Office which kept me laughing through it all, and finished the Breaking Bad series.

How to be human by Ruby Wax was a book that really resonated.

I listened to more female artists during lockdown too, like Wolf Alice, Sharon Van Etten, Kate Bush, Debbie Harry and Stevie Nicks.

What advice would you give to 16 year old you?

If I could write a book for her I would but I’ll keep it short.

Enjoy being 16 instead of focusing so much on the future.

Just go out with your friends, enjoy not having massive responsibilities!

Stop looking in the mirror as much – you look fine.

If you had to draw a pie chart for what keeps you mentally well – what would it look like?

20% exercise and diet

30% creating good music

20% spending quality time with the people I love

20% sleep and meditation

10% creating art and reading

What are you passionate about?

I’m passionate about ocean wildlife and the effects of climate change.

Spreading positivity. Also, spreading confidence.

I believe it is important in this industry to build each other up rather than bring each other down.

Tell us something not many people know about you.

My guilty pleasure is solving puzzles. NOT JIGSAWS. Riddles, anagrams, quizzes… I completely nerd out over them.
